Lumi's boots scraped against the pebbles in the path as she walked, ducking under low-hanging branches piled high with moss and weaving around misshapen stumps. A few paces behind her Seyenoi followed silently, leaving no trace other than the faintest of paw prints in the muddy soil. The two moved forward in the still of the woods, sharing in the quiet joy of the soggy nature around them. December in the forest.

Lumi came to a halt at a fork in the path, the two potential routes weaving away in opposite directions. She hesitated, but Noi steadily continued on. This way, he thought, his words melting into the subconscious swirl of her mind. Lumi nodded ascent and continued on.

From a few bends in the path ahead Lumi waited for his human. When she appeared he smiled slightly and took to her side, slowing down his four-legged gait for her two. You're a bit slow, he gently chided her.

Lumi rolled her eyes but couldn't help but smile. "Not my fault. Are we almost there?"

Yes. Noi trotted forward once more, loped back to his human. Here's the lake.

Lumi rested one hand against the damp bark of a tree, leaned forward. The path ended abruptly, slanting steeply down into the murky waters of the pond. The trees hung over the lip of the water, evergreen branches stretching up towards the grey cloudy sky. A flock of geese were fling in the distance, their forlorn honking echoing across the still surface of the lake.

"We found it!" Lumi knelt down, curled her fingers through Noi's fur in an embrace. "You knew where it was all along."

Of course. Noi nuzzled into his human's arms. I'd never steer you wrong.

Hey doofus, we're going to be late!

Rachel laughed, cuffed the back of Razz's head affectionately. "We're going home from school, Razz! How can we be late?"

Her daemon grinned, showing her pointed teeth. I want to be home! Walking is boring!

Rachel sighed, shifted her messenger bag from her left shoulder to her right. Razz was walking on her right, between his human and the street. He loped along, nose down to the ground, running from distraction to distraction. Rachel could not help but smile as she watched his antics.

Hey! Look at me! Razz took a flying leap onto the retaining wall of a nearby house, strolled along the brick surface. He gazed down at Rachel from his new height. Someday, son, all you see will be yoooooours, he quipped.

Rachel giggled, made to shove him down from his perch. But Razz skipped ahead out of her reach. Can't catch me! He sang into her mind. Rachel lunged for him again, was unsuccessful once more. You've got to try harder than that, sister.

Rachel chased after her daemon. When had her soul become such a handful?

I stretched and yawned, flexing my front paws and bearing my pointy canine teeth. It went on for some time, until I became aware that Jill wasn't paying attention. I collapsed back into a sulky pile of fur. Fine then.

Jill was glued to the TV. I rolled my eyes. She had a thing for the idiot box, and who could blame her? It's allure was too strong for anyone to fight off. Nevertheless, it was a bit late for this frippery. I pulled myself to my feet, ambled over. Jill, I began patiently.

She glanced over at me, then flickered her attention back to the television. "Yeah, Cody?"

I think it's kind of late. I pulled at the sleeve of her sweatshirt. Maybe we should get ready for bed now?

She shook me off, never taking her eyes off the screen. I groaned. Come on, we have school tomorrow! You've seen this episode before! You're not going to miss anything!

"Until the next commercial."

I fumed for an additional five minutes, during which Jill guffawed heartily at the antics onscreen. Finally the last laugh track died and a dancing tube of Crest replaced it. All right, time to go, I said, shoving at her side.

She went limp, allowing herself to be pushed over, still watching the TV. I shoved harder. She didn't move. Come on! I thought, a bit more vigorously. She did nothing.

That's it, then I went in search of the TV cord. Finding it, I grasped the rubber-coated cable and gave it a good yank. The screen flickered and died.

Jill sat up. "What happened?" she asked, pressing buttons in a genuinely distraught manner. I rolled my eyes. The voice of your conscious. Time for bed.

Eli stared at the blank computer screen, idly tapping the space bar with her thumb. The cursor flashed on and off on the blank word document, mocking her silently. She sighed, leaned back in her chair, stared at the ceiling.

A furry black and white head obscured her vision. What's up, lazybones? asked Serenax, perched on Elli's chest.

Elli smiled, pushed her daemon from her front, sat back up. "I'm having major writer's block," she complained. "No good ideas."

Have you tried it was a dark and stormy night? asked the tuxedo cat.

Elli rolled her eyes. "Yeah. Right. Like that's what'll bust me out of my block."

A bright and sunny day, then? Serenax, now seated next to the moniter on the desk, twitched his tail back and forth. I know nobody'd use that.

"Because it's stupid." Elli wriggled her fingers over the keyboard, began to type. My name is Elli, Serenax thought out loud. I don't know what to type.

"Shut up!" Elli stabbed at the enter key, began a new line of text. "Sometimes just the act of writing is enough to get you going."

Uh-huh. Serenax yawned pointedly. Let me know when you get to the good part where you're grappling against your moral soul and all that. She curled up on the desk, began to purr obnoxiously.

"I do that already," grumbled Elli.
